Dr. Ureta Center

The Dr. Librado I. Ureta Center Global Gift-Giving Program is established in the name and memory of Dr. Librado “Bado” I. Ureta, organizer of Alpha Phi Omega Philippines.

The Center aims to help young men and women make it to and through college to enable them to have a living and a life. The Dr. Librado I. Ureta Center Global Gift-Giving Program gets support from APO members around the world.

Through its global gift-giving program, The Dr. Librado I. Ureta Center is the capital campaign funding agency of APO-Philippines. The goal is to create an institution to receive and secure donations to Alpha Phi Omega to fund its Leadership, Friendship, and Service program benefiting Filipino college men and women – the future of the land.

The initial target is to raise Ten Million Pesos to acquire additional space and enable APO-Philippines to better serve the Filipino youth through its several hundred collegiate chapters across the archipelago and several hundred alumni associations around the world.

By March 2, 2009, when the global gift-giving program is more than halfway its Ten Million Peso target, APO-Philippines unveils the architectural design of the building.

By March 2, 2010, when the global gift-giving program is past its Ten Million Peso target and on its way to raising more funds for our Filipino youth future, APO-Philippines inaugurates its expanded headquarters.

Camping Fun at Lake Morena

APOAASB 2009-2010 Officers

Lake Morena in Campo, California. (See Photos)

Located about 60 miles east of San Diego, The Lake Morena County Campground offered the perfect venue for three APO alumni associations to come together and spend three days of outdoor fun. Over 80 APO alumni association members with their families and friends from San Diego, South Bay, and Hollywood came together for this joint camping. Sis Bernie Cruz headed the camping committee of South Bay assisted by Bro Dan Jardin taking care of the logistics of attendance, equipment and food. Brods Caloy Ebalo and Baby Rivera headed the San Diego and Hollywood committees respectively.

South Bay President PJ Aclan and First Lady Myra made sure that everyone was well fed with an amazing menu of Filipino recipes. Sis Susan De Ono-Lasset and Bro PJ also sponsored a “kambing” cook-off with Domi Borillo cooking papaitan for San Diego, Noly Pleyto and Terry Galzote cooking kilawen for Hollywood, and Carlo Araneta and Boogie Ambrey cooking kaldereta for South Bay. The judging was close but in the end the South Bay team won the $120 price. But it was all in the spirit of fun. Despite the hot weather everyone enjoyed the cameraderie and fellowship.

On the last day, Bro Stephen and Sis Madonna Castro along with their entire family prepared a sumptuous breakfast giving all the campers the needed energy to face the dreaded packing before heading home. APO Hollywood has volunteered to host next year’s joint affair in what looks to be a new Southern California tradition. For photos please go to Camping 2009 Album.

A New Year's Message

As 2008 comes to an end, I want to take a couple of moments to say “thank you” for your participation this past year. Your dedication in support of our Association and Alpha Phi Omega is greatly appreciated. This year has been a particularly exciting and challenging one. Together, we accomplished a tremendous amount of positive activities for our families, in spite of some challenges that we faced.

While it has been a difficult year in many respects, all of you who have shared your time and finances with the Association continue to inspire me with your spirit of friendship and generosity. We planned, participated and enjoyed APO activities with our friends and families. We participated in meetings, fellowships, conventions, fund-raisers, and service projects with APO-Philippines, ACNA, ARNA, and the APO alumni associations of San Diego, Greater Los Angeles, Northern California, Silicon Valley, and Central Valley of California.

At APO South Bay, members gave more than simply their money, time and energy; we also gave service to our communities. I would also like to encourage those that weren’t able to par tic pate this year because of one reason or another to please find time this coming new year to at least attend one or two membership meetings. I do believe that the time invested in participating with APO is time spent relieving the stresses from the other parts of our lives. Use APO as your pressure-release valve as you enjoy planning and participating in the events that we create for you and your family. We do make a difference in our communities, both professionally and personally.

Finally, your opinion matters. I am generating another membership survey for the new administration so that you may provide your input. The last survey in 2007 helped tremendously in focusing our efforts to what was important to our members. Remember, this new survey will be on the web (www.aposouthbay.org) and in the March edition of South Bay’s newsletter, “Currents”.

We have a dedicated team of APO members at South Bay. Your participation makes a big difference, now more than ever. Let’s support Bro. PJ Aclan and his incoming team of officers as they continue APO South Bay’s program of leadership, friendship and service.

Once again, on behalf of the 2007 - 2008 APO South Bay team, I thank you for your support during the past two years and wish you all a Happy New Year.
